The Old Montana Prison in Deer Lodge was retired as an active penitentiary in 1979. Today, the prison is maintained as a museum complex, but much of the facility has been left untouched. Over the years, various film productions have used the facility. It has also been the subject of a significant number of paranormal investigations. You can access offices, cell blocks, the old theater, the “hole,” solitary confinement, the prison yard and more. If you are looking for something a little smaller and reminiscent of the gold rush era, Bannack State Park has a small jail with barred windows and shackle hooks.
